Takanawa Tsukimachi

In a changing city, we await the unchanging moon. Takanawa, the gateway to Edo and a famous spot for moon-gazing. The "Twenty-Sixth Night Moon-Gazing," one of Edo's most beloved autumn traditions, returns in the Reiwa era. We await the moon that has remained unchanged for over a hundred years, and we contemplate and enjoy what lies ahead a hundred years from now. Until the moon rises. Takanawa Moon-Gazing begins.

In a changing city, we await the unchanging moon. About 300 years ago, Takanawa, the gateway to Edo and a famous spot for moon-gazing, was the setting for the "26th Night Waiting" ceremony. On the night of the 26th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, people gathered from all over Edo to wait for the thin, delicate moon to rise from the sea. It was believed that those who worshipped the moon would be blessed with good fortune. Food stalls lined the waterfront, and the sounds of shamisen and laughter echoed in the night sky. It was one of Edo's most iconic autumn scenes. Now, this moon-gazing culture is being reinterpreted for the modern age. Here at TAKANAWA GATEWAY, a place that connects culture to the next 100 years. Inheriting the culture once cherished in this place, we who live today will weave new stories. From moon art illuminating the city to sweets and sake associated with Takanawa, you will encounter tradition and new culture as you stroll through the city. Waiting for the moon that has remained unchanged for over 100 years, contemplating the next 100 years, and enjoying the moment. Until the moon rises. Takanawa Moon-Gathering begins.
