It opened in 2020 as the first new station in 49 years between Tamachi and Shinagawa stations on Yamanote Line. It aims to promote urban development in the Takanawa and Shinagawa area and become a gateway connecting Tokyo with the world.

The movable lawn furniture installed at EKI Park can be reconfigured to suit different purposes, and can accommodate a variety of events throughout the year. With a comfortable, park-like space, it will evolve into a place worthy of a next-generation station that will serve as a gateway to the city. The operator will be Tokyo International School (TIS), an educational institution accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), an international school accreditation body, and approved by the International Baccalaureate international education program, and an international education system is planned to be introduced.TIS offers a consistent International Baccalaureate educational program (*2) from kindergarten through 11th grade (from kindergarten senior year to second year of high school) (*1). The majority of the parents of the students are expatriates from embassies and foreign companies in Japan, making it an international school with approximately 470 students from 73 countries (as of September 2025).
